New England Adventure 2022 - Day 6
We awoke to a wonderful surprise delivery of Congden’s doughnuts. Congden’s has been a legendary bakery in Wells since 1955. One of the members of our group bought them. In the summer season people line up before they open up and the line is often 50 people long. It is the off season there were 10 people in line ahead of him. It was our lucky day because in the off season they are only open Thursday thru Sunday. We sat in the back yard and enjoyed doughnuts and coffee and the unseasonably warm weather for mid-October in Maine.
These doughnuts are really that good.
We departed the condos around noon to go on a trolley ride around Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. Along the way we stopped at several antique shops. In Kennebunkport we boarded the trolley for their last tour of the season. Ed was our driver and tour guide. Ed has been driving the trolley for over 10 years. He drove past all the famous places including many homes owned by sea captains in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. The highlight of the tour is Walkers Point. The property was owned by the former US President George H. W. Bush and his wife Barbara. Since their passing Former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura are the owners and primary residents. They spend about half the year in Kennebunkport and other half of the year on their ranch near Dallas, TX. When the Bushes are in residence they fly the Texas and Maine flags over the compound. When they are not in residence they fly only the American flag. Secret service agents are always on duty year round.
The InTown trolley is ready to take us her final tour of the season.
The Bush estate on Walker Point. This property was formerly owned by Barbara Walker Bush’s family.
It is picturesque everywhere you look in Kennebunkport.
There are several long sandy beaches in the area that are a Mecca for surfers from Vermont and New Hampshire. We stopped for a late lunch at the Boathouse. They have a wonderful clam chowder.
The town of Kennebunkport is decorated for fall and Halloween. We could not help but stop for a photo opportunity in front of the pumpkin display.
A pirate pumpkin in Kennebunkport.
The South Congregational Church is one of the most photographed locations.
The obligatory group shot with the pumpkins. A good looking group.
We drove back to the condo and the others packed up and headed home. Something about having to work on Monday. Priscilla and I will stay here and enjoy this lovely fall weather for a few more days.
A bonus photo of fall on the Kennebunk river. Photo by Priscilla. The name Kennebunk is an American Indian word for long cut bank which is on the side of a hill.
