New England Adventure 2022 - Day 7

We awoke to the fog in the bog. Our scenic vista of the ocean was reduced to barely a few hundred feet of the back yard. We started our day with coffee and the day old Congden’s doughnuts. They are still great the second day.

This was our view of the sunrise on Sunday.

Fog in the bog at sunrise on Monday morning. What a difference a day makes.

I went for a morning walk for the first time in several days. I was the only person out for a walk in Wells. I explored the neighborhood to discover all the local businesses. There is everything you will ever need within a half mile.

We were out of the condo by the crack of 1:00 pm to explore a nearby National Wildlife Refuge. We stopped for lunch at the iconic Maine Diner. This diner was featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives with Guy Fieri. We both had clam chowder. Priscilla had breakfast for lunch with eggs benedict and Canadian bacon and I had …… wait for it ….. the lobster roll. There was a full lobster worth of meat on that hot dog bun. We ordered a bowl of seafood chowder to go. Dinner.

Lunch time.

Do not judge this book by it’s cover.

Guy Fieri was here. Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

We drove to the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Park.  Rachel Carson wrote the 400 page book Silent Spring in 1962.  Her book describes the impact of the chemical DDT on animals, birds and people.  The silent spring refers to the lack of any animal or bird sounds in nature because they have all been killed by DDT.  It was read by people around the world including President John F. Kennedy.  The result was the reduced use of DDT and the birds still sing in the spring. So far.

We are about to hike through the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge.

This is the book that saved the planet.

There is still some nice fall foliage in Maine.

So many nice views in this park.

Our next stop was the Wells Beach. It is raining and the waves are crashing on the rocks. We observed all of this from the comfort of our car. After a long scenic drive on Atlantic Ave. we returned to the condo.

Tomorrow we will meet our long time friends Jay and Pat Ferriter for dinner in Portsmouth.
